On March 2nd, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning hosted a routine press conference. A reporter from Anadolu Agency in Turkey asked, according to reports, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps of Iran has blockaded the Strait of Hormuz, preventing commercial ships from passing. One-fifth of the world’s oil and energy supplies, as well as nearly half of China’s oil imports, pass through this strait. The spokesperson was asked, what impact would the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz have on China’s imports and energy security?

Mao Ning stated that the Strait of Hormuz and its surrounding waters are important international channels for cargo and energy trade. Maintaining security and stability in this region is in the common interest of the international community. “China urges all parties to immediately cease military actions, avoid further escalation of tensions, prevent regional instability, and avoid greater impacts on global economic development.”
