TechCrunch reports that on March 2nd, Beijing time, Amazon’s cloud computing division AWS announced that its data center in the United Arab Emirates experienced a power outage caused by an object hitting the facility, sparking a fire.

Currently, the UAE is under attack from retaliatory missile and drone strikes by Iran, which are part of the ongoing conflict following U.S. and Israeli actions against Iran. The strikes have affected airports, ports, and residential areas across the country and the wider Gulf region.

When asked by Reuters whether this data center incident was related to the attacks, AWS neither confirmed nor denied.

AWS stated: “Around 4:30 a.m. Pacific Standard Time, one of our availability zones (mec1-az2) was impacted by an object hitting the data center, causing sparks and a fire.” According to the company’s official website, an “availability zone” consists of one or more interconnected physical data centers. These zones are physically separate and isolated within an AWS region.

AWS also said that fire crews cut power to the facility while working to extinguish the fire. The data center operator noted that it will take several hours for the affected availability zone to resume operations and that other availability zones in the UAE are currently functioning normally.
