The company appointed Asha Sharma as executive vice president and chief executive of the gaming division. Sharma previously led product development for artificial intelligence models and services at Microsoft.
Spencer will remain in an advisory role through the summer to ensure a smooth transition, Chief Executive Satya Nadella said.
Microsoft reported last month that gaming revenue fell about 9.5% in the December quarter. The company also recorded impairment charges in the division and has raised Xbox hardware prices amid tariff-related cost pressures and uncertain consumer spending.
Sharma said she plans to renew focus on the Xbox console and core players. The gaming unit faces strong competition from Sony’s PlayStation platform, particularly in console market share and exclusive titles.
Microsoft expanded its presence in gaming with its $69 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard in 2023, following regulatory scrutiny. The division is also navigating shifts in technology as artificial intelligence becomes more integrated into game development.
The company said Matt Booty will serve as executive vice president and chief content officer, reporting to Sharma. Sarah Bond, president and chief operating officer at Xbox, is leaving the company.
