Minnesota lawmakers are considering a bill to ban cryptocurrency self-service kiosks statewide, citing concerns that these terminals are used for scams targeting vulnerable residents. Police testimony revealed that some elderly victims lost significant savings, with one victim even giving half a month's income to scammers. The proposed bill would repeal the current 2024 regulatory framework, which includes daily transaction limits and refund policies, as officials believe these safeguards are insufficient. The state Department of Commerce reported receiving a total of 70 complaints related to self-service kiosks last year, with total losses reaching $540,000. This move aligns with recent regulatory actions taken by Illinois and international jurisdictions such as New Zealand and Australia.
