On February 27, the South Korean government decided to conditionally allow companies like Google to export high-precision maps at a 1:5000 scale. The government stated that Google has agreed to accept most of the conditions proposed, including blurring military and security facilities in South Korea, removing coordinate markers of Korean territory, and restricting the public availability of the maps. The South Korean government said that the navigation maps obtained by Google will be processed by domestic partner companies on South Korean servers using raw data, and will be used for navigation services only after government review and approval. Since 2007, Google has requested three times to provide high-precision maps to facilitate map services in South Korea. However, the South Korean government has consistently opposed exporting high-precision maps that contain information about security facilities such as military bases. (Jiemian News)
