FERC rejects AEP request to sell capacity in upcoming auction

Abstract generation in progress

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) rejected American Electric Power’s (AEP) request to sell up to 750 MW in an upcoming PJM Interconnection capacity auction. FERC determined that AEP failed to demonstrate a concrete problem or PJM’s need for the capacity, suggesting AEP’s issue stemmed from its own business decisions to procure excess capacity. Critics argued AEP was trying to offload capacity acquired for data centers that did not materialize, a rationale FERC appeared to support.
