Cuba is experiencing an extreme weather anomaly: the first temperature record
Such an event is extremely rare for an island nation. On Tuesday morning, the province of Matanzas in Cuba recorded an unprecedented phenomenon — the temperature dropped to 0°C, marking a historic moment for the country. For a tropical archipelago, this signifies a serious change in the usual climate conditions.
Breakthrough of a thirty-year record
This cold snap broke the national temperature record, which had remained unchanged for over three decades. The previous minimum of 0.6°C was recorded in February 1996. The new value is 0.6 degrees lower than what was observed nearly 30 years ago. According to Ming Pao, this extreme cold period has surpassed all previous meteorological indicators in Cuba.
Why this is so rare for an island nation
As an island country in the Caribbean, Cuba is typically characterized by a stable warm climate with minimal temperature fluctuations. Such extreme cold conditions are practically impossible under normal circumstances. This unexpected shift in weather patterns highlights the influence of global atmospheric processes on the region and demonstrates how even the most resilient climate systems can undergo significant changes.
