The letter, signed jointly by Liam Byrne, chair of the Business and Trade Committee, and six other colleagues, pointed out that cryptocurrency donations undermine transparency, traceability, and enforcement in political funding.
Since July 2025, the Labour government has been considering banning cryptocurrency political donations. Reform UK became the first British political party to accept cryptocurrency donations in May 2025, and any ban would directly impact it, though the £9 million donation it received from cryptocurrency investor Christopher Harborne was made in fiat currency.
