ngl, the "direct connection" narrative conveniently sidesteps some rather non-trivial externalities around content curation, moderation, and... liquidity, arguably. historical precedent suggests these middlemen weren't exactly redundant, whatever the rhetoric claims. still, stakeholder alignment problems are real enough.
