Is the data in the cloud really safe? You might have never thought about this question.

Every day, we upload photos and files to the cloud, assuming they are secure. But the reality is, this data actually resides on centralized servers of service providers. They can view it whenever they want, restrict access at will, and if policies change, the data can disappear. It's like handing over the keys to someone else—everything in your house is beyond your control.

Where is the problem with this model? The cost is not cheap. Traditional cloud storage costs soar as data volume increases—more users mean higher bills. Security risks are also significant—if the centralized server is hacked, the privacy of thousands of users can be exposed instantly. Even more upsetting is data censorship—if certain content is deemed "violating," it can be taken down immediately, and entire accounts may be banned, turning years of accumulated data into nothing.

Is there a better way? Distributed storage has arrived. By leveraging shared resources across global nodes, storage costs can be reduced to one-fifth or even less of traditional solutions. Data is stored across multiple nodes, so even if hackers breach one or two, they can't access the complete information. Most importantly, no single organization can control your data—want to delete? Dream on. Whether it's creators' original content, researchers' critical data, or ordinary people's private files, they can be stored permanently and securely on this network.

It's also easy to operate. Connect your wallet, upload, manage—it's no different from regular cloud drives, but the security and freedom behind it are on a completely different level. Individuals can store private data, enterprises can store business information, and developers can integrate storage functions into their applications. Users shift from passively accepting centralized platform restrictions to truly controlling their digital assets.

Centralized platforms are a big pitfall; it was about time to switch to distributed ones.

Centralized cloud drives should have died long ago. Who dares to look at my private photos? --- Distributed storage sounds good, but how does it actually work in practice? --- Sounds nice, but isn't it just another round of the leek harvest game. --- One-fifth of the cost? Really? It doesn't feel that cheap. --- Permanent storage sounds great, but who guarantees that nodes won't run away? --- This is what Web3 should be doing, not just speculating on coins. --- The step of connecting the wallet can discourage more than half of ordinary users. --- Data censorship is really a sore point; those who have been banned understand. --- Mainly a trust issue. Distributed sounds even more dangerous. --- It's expensive, but at least Baidu Cloud won't get hacked to the point where you lose everything.

Centralized cloud drives should have died long ago; now they rely on Web3 to save the day.

ok so they're basically selling the narrative that distributed storage is some magic bullet... technically speaking, erasure coding + geographic redundancy doesn't actually guarantee immutability the way they're implying. nodes can still go offline, incentives misalign, recovery becomes a whole thing.

Centralized cloud storage is a trap; it was about time to switch to distributed storage.
