Gómez Takes the Helm: Disney Promotes 22-Year Veteran to Treasurer Role
The Walt Disney Company has appointed Carlos A. Gómez as Senior Vice President and Treasurer, marking a significant leadership transition in the company’s financial operations. Gómez steps into the role vacated by Jonathan S. Headley, who is retiring after more than two decades of service to the entertainment giant.
A Career Built at Disney
What makes this promotion noteworthy is Gómez’s deep institutional knowledge. The newly-appointed Treasurer has spent 22 years with The Walt Disney Company, holding various positions across the finance division. His journey within the organization began in 1995 as an Analyst in Financial Risk Management. After a brief stint at Goldman Sachs in investment banking, he returned to Disney in 2002 to join the Corporate Finance team, where he held the Director role from 2006 to 2011.
Before his elevation to Treasurer, Gómez served as Vice President of Investor Relations since 2011, where he managed crucial relationships with research analysts and institutional investors. During this tenure, he was instrumental in shaping communication strategies for major corporate initiatives, from quarterly earnings announcements to high-profile mergers and acquisitions, including the landmark acquisition of 21st Century Fox.
Comprehensive Treasury Responsibilities
In his new position reporting directly to Chief Financial Officer Christine M. McCarthy, Gómez will oversee The Walt Disney Company’s entire global treasury organization. This expansive portfolio encompasses corporate finance, liquidity management, capital markets operations, banking activities, interest rate and foreign currency risk management, enterprise project finance, pension and investment management, consumer payments, and worldwide cash operations.
Additionally, Gómez will manage the company’s banking relationships and handle communications with credit rating agencies—a critical function for a major public corporation managing complex financial operations across global markets.
Acknowledging the Transition
Christine M. McCarthy, Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, praised the incoming Treasurer’s capabilities: “Carlos brings exceptional talent, versatility, and twenty-two years of Disney experience. His financial acumen, strategic thinking, and leadership qualities make him ideally suited for this role. His experience working alongside Jonathan and the treasury team has provided invaluable preparation for this responsibility.”
She also highlighted the outgoing Treasurer’s contributions, noting that Headley leaves behind “an outstanding treasury organization and a strong roster of talent,” with Gómez representing a prime example of the succession pipeline that Headley cultivated over his tenure.
Looking Forward
Gómez himself expressed confidence in the transition: “I’m grateful for this opportunity to lead a world-class Treasury organization. My nearly twenty-year working relationship with Jon has prepared me well for this role, and I’m committed to building on the strong foundation my predecessors established. I’ll focus on ensuring Disney maintains optimal access to capital markets while supporting the team through an evolving business landscape.”
Armed with an MBA from UCLA Anderson School of Management and a B.A. in Economics from Stanford University, Gómez brings both educational credentials and practical experience to one of the most critical financial leadership positions at one of the world’s largest media and entertainment corporations.
