Leadership Transition at NASDAQ-Listed Virtu Financial: Mike Viola to Lead as New Chairman
Virtu Financial, Inc. (NASDAQ: VIRT), a prominent trading and financial technology firm, has confirmed a significant executive reshuffle with Mike Viola stepping into the role of Chairman. This leadership transition follows Robert Greifeld’s departure from the Board, marking a pivotal moment for the publicly traded firm.
Greifeld, who has chaired the company since July 2017 when Virtu completed its acquisition of KCG Holdings, has opted to pursue alternative ventures. His decision comes as he plans to establish Cornerstone FTM, an investment fund specializing in financial technology, alongside various philanthropic and board positions with other institutions.
Mike Viola’s Path and Credentials
Mike Viola’s ascension to Chairman represents a natural progression within Virtu’s leadership structure. Having joined the Board in 2016, Viola has progressively taken on greater responsibilities, serving as chair of the Nominating and Corporate Governance Committee since 2019. Prior to his board involvement, Viola held several operational roles within the organization, most recently as a senior trader specializing in foreign exchange and global commodities.
Beyond his involvement with the NASDAQ-listed firm, Viola has expanded his professional portfolio. Since 2016, he has presided over the Viola family’s private investment operations based in New York. Additionally, he holds board positions at Independent Bank Group, Inc. (NASDAQ: IBTX), manages interests in multiple private enterprises, and chairs the Viola Foundation.
Reflecting on a Period of Transformation
During Greifeld’s tenure as Chairman, Virtu experienced substantial expansion. Two marquee acquisitions—KCG Holdings and ITG, Inc.—reshaped the firm’s market position and capabilities. Douglas Cifu, CEO and Co-Founder of Virtu Financial, acknowledged this period: “Bob’s leadership during this transformational phase was instrumental to our growth trajectory. We anticipate Michael will build upon these achievements as he assumes the chairmanship.”
Vincent J. Viola, the company’s founder and current Chairman Emeritus, expressed confidence in the transition: “Michael carries my complete trust as he steps into this pivotal role. Bob’s contribution to the Board and Management during this period has been invaluable.”
Greifeld reflected on his departure with optimism: “Working alongside Vinnie, Doug, and Michael has been genuinely rewarding. I depart with lifelong relationships and confidence in Virtu’s trajectory ahead.” He indicated he would maintain involvement with the USATF Foundation, Cornerstone entities, and board roles at Capital ROCK LLC, Financeware LLC, and Runway Growth Finance.
