B3 in 2024: Understand the New Calendar and When the Stock Exchange Closes
Investors operating in the Brazilian Stock Exchange need to stay updated on the schedule changes and closing calendar for 2024. B3, also known as the Brazil Stock, Commodities, and Futures Exchange, has set a new operating period that affects both regular trading hours and the dates when the stock exchange closes. Understanding these changes is essential to avoid missing trading opportunities.
When B3 Operates: The Standard Hours
Since 2022, B3 follows a well-defined operating pattern. From Monday to Friday, on business days, trading occurs between 10:00 and 17:00, Brasília time. It is important to note that before the official trading session, there is a pre-opening period from 9:45 to 10:00, during which the exchange records orders issued after the previous session’s close.
Additionally, after the regular close at 17:00, there is the after-market session, a period when some assets continue trading between 17:30 and 18:00. This extended hours are sensitive to variations in the American calendar, especially during daylight saving time.
Important Change in March 2024
Starting March 11, 2024, when daylight saving time in the US ends, B3’s operating hours will change. From November 6, 2023, to March 10, 2024, the exchange remained open until 18:00. With the end of daylight saving time in the United States, which occurs on March 10, the closing time reverts to previous standards.
The new schedule reestablishes closing at 17:00, and the after-market resumes regular operation from 17:30 to 18:00. This synchronization with the international calendar reflects the interconnectedness between Brazilian and American financial markets, especially considering the significant presence of foreign investors in daily operations.
Holiday Calendar Affecting the Stock Exchange in 2024
B3 will be closed on the following national holidays:
*On Ash Wednesday (February 14), there is a continuous session from 13:00 to 17:55, with pre-opening starting at 12:45. For derivatives and commodities, trading begins at 13:00 with pre-opening at 12:55. The organized over-the-counter market operates from 13:00 to 17:55.
The Impact of Changes on the Financial Market
The changes in B3’s operating hours are not arbitrary. They are driven by the need to synchronize with global markets, allowing the Brazilian exchange to remain competitive and attractive to international investors. The interdependence between American and Brazilian exchanges manifests through capital flows, exchange rate fluctuations, and commodity price swings such as oil and metals.
For Brazilian investors, this synchronization is crucial. Failing to monitor the closing time of the stock exchange can result in missed trading opportunities or delays in strategic operations. Clear communication of the hours ensures that all market participants are aligned and prepared.
Important Tips for 2024
International holidays, unlike Brazilian ones, do not affect B3’s regular operation unless they coincide with special dates in Brazil. Stay informed through official exchange channels for any announcements regarding exceptional changes.
Record all closing periods in your personal and investment calendars. Properly scheduling your operations, considering the new hours of the stock exchange’s closing time, is essential to optimize your trading strategy throughout 2024.
