ChatGPT has added a shopping feature, moving towards the path of AI agents.
OpenAI has expanded the shopping capabilities of ChatGPT, allowing for recommendations, price comparisons, and redirection to shopping platforms all at once, moving towards a more considerate and proactive AI agent.
ChatGPT expands chatbot services, adding shopping functionality.
According to a report by Bloomberg, users can now quickly compare products and click on links in ChatGPT to make purchases on external websites. This feature is currently available for only a few categories, including electronics, fashion, beauty, and home goods, but it is expected to expand to more product categories in the future.
OpenAI is constantly trying to position ChatGPT as a universal application that provides search engines, voice assistants, and video generators. This move aims to increase users' time spent using chat Bots and help ChatGPT stay ahead of competing services from Anthropic, Google, and Musk's xAI. The artificial intelligence search startup Perplexity AI Inc. has also expanded its shopping features.
Recommendation, price comparison, and redirecting to shopping platform completed at once.
Users can ask ChatGPT about the products they want to purchase, set prices and other requirements, and ask ChatGPT to recommend suitable products and compare prices on the platform. When providing product descriptions and recommendations, ChatGPT will also include source links, allowing users to verify information more conveniently and save a lot of time.
However, ChatGPT currently does not have a built-in shopping feature.
In other words, you cannot directly use a credit card to make purchases of physical or virtual goods within ChatGPT. Currently, ChatGPT mainly provides:
Information Inquiry
Shopping Suggestions
Help you find the correct platform or process to purchase goods.
Guide you to understand product comparisons, price differences, and purchasing steps.
However, in some specific scenarios, if you are using a third-party application like "ChatGPT with Browsing" or a third-party application (such as an e-commerce site with an API), ChatGPT can help you find a purchase link, but the real transaction will still jump to an external platform ( such as Amazon, Shopee, Taobao, etc.).
An OpenAI spokesperson stated that the company would not charge affiliate revenue for purchases made through ChatGPT.
Future Direction of AI Agent Model
The future AI will increasingly be "like a considerate assistant" rather than just a "Q&A machine," and ChatGPT is evolving towards the AI Agent model, which is an inevitable trend.
In the future ChatGPT, you might see a scene like this:
"Help me find three home coffee machines under 5000 dollars, compare the specifications, and place an order for me" → ChatGPT automatically queries → compares → automatically places an order (after your confirmation)
"Help me create a workout plan for August and sync it to my Google Calendar"
Users no longer need "step-by-step instructions" but set goals for ChatGPT to complete the detailed tasks itself.
OpenAI has begun testing the "Memory feature" (to be released in 2024, expanded in 2025), allowing ChatGPT to remember personal settings and historical conversations. In the future, ChatGPT will no longer just be a simple chat companion, but will evolve into a digital assistant that understands you better and can help you accomplish many tasks.
