Who is Kevin Warsh, who is Donald Trump considering to replace Powell as Fed Chairman?
There are claims that Donald Trump is planning to make fundamental changes to the Fed. Trump is reportedly considering replacing current Fed Chair Jerome Powell with Kevin Warsh. This appointment may have caused controversy in both traditional finance circles and the crypto world. Kevin M. Warsh served on the Federal Reserve's Board of Governors from 2006 to 2011. Warsh, who studied public policy majoring in economics and statistics at Stanford University and graduated from Harvard Law School, began his career at Morgan Stanley. In 2002, he joined the George W. Bush administration and served on the National Economic Council. Appointed Governor of the Federal Reserve in 2006, Warsh has assumed important responsibilities during his tenure on global economic affairs and in particular the 2007–09 financial crisis. Warsh made an early-stage investment in algorithm-stable cryptocurrency project Basis in 2018 and later in crypto index fund management company Bitwise. But his approach to cryptocurrencies has always been cautious. Warsh, who thinks Bitcoin cannot afford as a means of payment due to its highly volatile price, has made what he likens to gold as a "sustainable store of value." He described blockchain technology as promising software for the U.S. financial system "when used properly." In a 2022 Wall Street Journal article, Warsh argued that the U.S. should develop (CBDC) central bank's digital currency in response to China's move to issue a digital yuan. However, this view has been met with criticism from Bitcoin supporters as he describes private cryptocurrencies as "software that works like money." Warsh's views contrast with Trump's recent statements about Bitcoin. Trump promised to establish a Bitcoin strategic reserve for the United States at the Bitcoin Conference to be held in Nashville in July 2024. It remains unclear whether Trump will actually appoint Warsh as head of the Fed.
