The Solana (SOL) community is actively discussing increasing the network’s Computing Unit (CU) capacity, which is a very important metric that regulates transaction complexity and protects network resources.

Calculation Units function similarly to Ethereum’s gas fees, ensuring transaction efficiency and protecting the blockchain from excessive computing demands.

Currently, Solana’s block limit is set at 48 million CU. However, recent proposals, including SIMD-0207 and SIMD-0256, suggest raising this limit to enhance network performance. SIMD-0207 proposes a moderate increase to 50 million CU, while SIMD-0256 advocates for a more significant increase to 60 million CU.

Solana developers state that the current block limits serve to maintain network stability by allowing the majority of participants to keep up with the transaction process. However, they indicate that the current mainnet traffic is not significantly constrained by block execution times and creates room for capacity expansion.

Solana developers stated, “The primary purpose of block limits is to ensure that network participants can keep up with block transactions” and added: “This proposal aims for a significant increase to 60 million CU to provide additional capacity without stressing the network.”

The discussion on the expansion of the CU also included alternative strategies:

  • No change of block limits: This approach maintains network stability but leaves potential capacity unused.
  • A further increase of 96 million CU: This is currently assessed very aggressively as it could lead to unforeseen challenges, particularly affecting the turbine protocol and the supporting infrastructure for users.

Developers prefer a gradual increase in CU limits that will be in line with ongoing improvements in network performance, rather than making a radical change.
