The Wall Street Journal: "Trump administration considers deploying up to 10,000 ground troops to the Middle East"

On the 26th (local time), The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported, citing sources from the U.S. Department of Defense, that the department is considering a plan to deploy up to 10,000 additional soldiers to the Middle East. This move aims to expand military options while President Trump is negotiating with Iran.

The forces under consideration for deployment may include infantry and armored units. If these troops are actually sent, they will join the approximately 5,000-member Marine Expeditionary Force that has already received deployment orders, along with thousands of soldiers from the 82nd Airborne Division. The Marine Expeditionary Force is expected to arrive in the area as early as this weekend.

The specific deployment locations have not been confirmed. However, WSJ reports that areas within striking distance of Iranian territory are likely being considered, including Khark Island, a major oil export hub for Iran. President Trump has previously stated that he will ensure the Strait of Hormuz remains open, regardless of whether U.S. allies support this.

The deliberation on increasing troop levels comes as the U.S. and Iran discuss a ceasefire through private contacts. Observers believe this move is intended to ensure negotiating leverage by increasing military pressure while seeking a diplomatic solution.

White House Deputy Press Secretary Anna Kelly stated that the announcement regarding troop deployment will be made by the Department of Defense and noted that President Trump holds decision-making authority over all military options. The U.S. Central Command declined to comment on the matter.
