Amazon Invests $10B In NC AI Data Centers, Tests Humanoid Robots
HomeNews* Amazon is investing $10 billion to build data centers in North Carolina, supporting Artificial Intelligence (AI) infrastructure.
As part of the project, Amazon will invest in technician training at community colleges, promote science and technology (STEM) education in schools, and create career programs for broadband fiber jobs. The company also launched a $150,000 Richmond County Community Fund for projects focused on workforce development, sustainability, and public health.
Leo Fan, co-founder of Cysic, told Decrypt that the scale of Amazon’s investment highlights the high cost of building and maintaining AI infrastructure. Fan said, “This prices out smaller-scale developers or companies that may not have the funds to access the infrastructure and hardware needed to provide the necessary computing power, disincentivising innovation.” He added that such large investments can concentrate AI innovation among big technology companies, potentially slowing down broader progress.
Amazon is also working on AI software for humanoid robots, intending for them to perform delivery tasks. The company has created a “humanoid park”—an indoor obstacle course—in one of its San Francisco offices for testing these robots, according to a report by The Information. Early tests use third-party robots. Amazon has not publicly commented on the project.
Recently, Amazon also signed a multi-year licensing agreement with The New York Times to provide journalism, recipes, and sports content to Alexa and its AI models.
